High speed chase ends in traffic accident

    Juvenile in police custody

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A high speed chase on Friday night (May 6) ended in an accident on the FT Williams Highway and a juvenile being in custody assisting police in the theft of a vehicle.

Information reaching SKNVibes indicates that while a female had exited her car to open the gate to her Harbour View, Bird Rock residence on Friday night, the key was still in the ignition and two masked men jumped into the vehicle and drove it away.

A report was made to the police and according to Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, at approximately 9:15 on that night and officers from the Traffic Department received a report of a stolen vehicle.

“As a result of this report, officers of the Traffic Department, Criminal Investigation Department and the Special Services Unit were informed and a search operation immediately launched. At approximately 11:15 p.m., while members of the Special Services Unit were patrolling on the FT Williams Highway, they spotted the stolen vehicle, P 2315, travelling in the opposite direction in the vicinity of the Shadwell Roundabout.

“The stolen vehicle was heading in an easterly direction and the patrol immediately turned around set chase. The chase took them to the St. Peters area and the driver of the stolen vehicle managed to evade the police temporarily. The police however continue the search and managed to make contact with the stolen vehicle,” Henderson said.

The PRO noted that the patrol continued chasing after the vehicle as it was heading down New Road towards Shadwell Roundabout.

“The driver of the stolen vehicle failed to observe the traffic laws and drove right of the Roundabout, instead of left, and collided with another vehicle, R 530, which was already in the Roundabout heading west.

“Both vehicles eventually came to a halt and four male occupants exited the stolen vehicle and fled the scene. Members of the Criminal Investigations Department, Crime Scene Department and Traffic Department were informed and summoned to the area to carry out investigations, while members of the Special Services Unit went in search of the four persons who fled the scene,” Henderson said.

The PRO said the scene was processed and in searching the stolen vehicle police found three license plates on the back seat, all bearing different numbers.

“Both vehicles were extensively damaged. R 530 had extensive damage to the right front door, fender and wheel but its three occupants escaped serious injuries. The front end of P 2315 was also extensively damaged,” he added.

Inspector Henderson noted that the driver of the stolen vehicle will likely face charges of driving without due care and attention, failing to keep left in a Roundabout, driving while not covered by insurance and larceny of a motor vehicle.

He also noted that a juvenile is in custody assisting the police with their investigations.

SKNVibes understands that the owner of the stolen vehicle had an undisclosed sum of money in a handbag that was in the car and some of it was found on the juvenile.
