BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A four-vehicle traffic accident involving that of the Federation’s Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Denzil Douglas, and former Minister of Health Rupert Herbert occurred this morning (May 11) on the Island Main Road in the vicinity of the International University of Nursing.

On arrival at the scene, this publication saw the Prime Minister’s vehicle and three others, with obvious damage, parked on the Island Main Road.

SKNVibes spoke with Sergeant Amory of the Traffic Department, who noted that they received a report of the accident shortly after 9:15 a.m. and officers responded immediately.

“On arrival at the scene, we observed that there were four vehicles involved in the accident. We are still investigating the matter at this time, but I was told that no one was injured although some of the vehicles are badly damaged,” Amory said.

When asked by this media house, Amory declared that he was unable to provide the names of the owners of the vehicles as well as the occupants.

This media house was however informed that the Prime Minister was within the vehicle but was driven away shortly after the accident.

Amory noted that they were still in the initial stage of their investigation and could not provide much information. He however promised to provide further information on conclusion of their investigation of the matter.

The former Minister of Health was at the scene and his vehicle was parked immediately behind that of the Prime Minister’s.

    UPDATE:

A release sent by the Prime Minister's Press Secretary, Erasmus Williams, confirmed that Dr. Douglas was not injured in this morning's traffic accident while on his way to work.

“Prime Minister Douglas arrived to work. I had the opportunity of seeing him and speaking with him this morning. He is not injured. He is in good spirits and is carrying out his normal duties which include meetings with General Douglas Fraser, Commander of the United States Southern Command and the Secretary General of the St. Lucia-based OECS Secretariat, Her Excellency Dr. Len Ishmael,” Williams is quoted as saying.

He said the Office of the Prime Minister has been flooded with telephone calls from nationals and friends at home and abroad.
