BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LOUD cheers from a fair-sized crowd echoed throughout Carnival Village last night (May 12) as Laurick Browne and Andria Esdaille were adjudged the 2011 Prince and Princess of the Maurice Hillier Junior School’s Rainbow Pageant.

The pageant, which was one of the many activities held in recognition of the school’s 11th Anniversary of No TV Week celebration, comes to an end today with a march through the streets of Basseterre.

This year’s No TV Week celebration was held under the theme ‘Moulding the Children of our Nation through Consistent Character Education’.

The pageant, however, dealt with Character Building and Esdaille, a Grade Three pupil, represented Caring while Browne of Grade One represented Fairness.

This year there were no runners-up, unlike last year’s event when a decision was made to deviate from tradition in recognition of the 10th Anniversary.

All of the contestants [10] did exceptionally well throughout the competition and had left no room for disappointment in their performances.

In the Talent segment, Esdaille displayed flexibility in a dance presentation to a song titled ‘Where Is The Love’. Browne, on the other hand, imitated reggae legend Bob Marley spreading the message of love by singing ‘One Love’ while sporting a Marley T-shirt and hat fitted with flowing dreadlocks.

The other contestants who represented Trustworthiness, Responsibility and Respect were: Nadacia Chapman of Grade One; Jaeda Arthurton and Tyon Wilkinson of Grade Two; Onaje Caines of Grade Three; Breana Hutchinson and Philip Browne of Grade Four; and Tavelle McSheen and Ervin Hanley of Grade Five.

In addition to Talent, the other judged segments were Getting To Know Me, Expressive Number, Creative Wear and Afternoon Delight.

The pageant saw an early performance by the young rising star Sunrisa.

She was later followed by C-Money, Nicha B, Pinocchio and Footsy, who all had the children running, screaming and singing along with them.

At the end of the pageant, Principal Icilma Springer thanked the participants, sponsors, parents and all others who made the night’s proceedings the success it was.

“Thank you to all who came out and encouraged the children. I hope it was not only fun but educational,” she said.

Also in her closing remarks, Springer urged all parents to teach and encourage their children to become responsible individuals. She also stressed the importance of them overseeing their children adapt to the character traits depicted by the contestants.

The show came to an end around 11:00 p.m.
