EFA Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 18th 2011 - EFA President, Mr John Evans visited the Federation on 9th – 11th May 2011. His schedule was packed over the three days.  On Monday, 9th May he, along with local representative, Ms Leah Sahely, met with the Chief Education Officer, Dr Patrick Welcome and Senior Assistant Secretary, Ms Jacqueline Flemming, and also paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Honourable Sam Condor.

Two special presentations were made that afternoon to: 1) the St Kitts and Nevis Police Force at the Police Training School, with focus on the courses available on Criminology and Risk Crisis and Disaster Management by the University of Leicester and 2) HR and general managers at the FND with focus on HR and Management courses offered by the University of Leicester.

The presentation to the managers also included an interactive session by Dr Sybil Allen-Jones. Participants were split into three groups to indicate how they, as managers, would deal with various scenarios that could exist in the workplace. She reinforced the importance of learning through higher education tried and tested techniques to handle such occurrences.

Mr Evans and Ms Sahely also visited the sister island Nevis. They met with Mrs Lornette Queeley-Connor (Acting Permanent Secretary of Education) and Inspector Hilroy Brandy, Division Commander, to discuss programmes offered by EFA and how their staff could benefit from these programmes. They also participated in interviews with Choice FM and NTV news station. On return to St Kitts, Mr Evans made a presentation, including a question and answer session, to prospective students at the Ocean Terrace Inn. He informed them of two new academic partners, Anglia Ruskin University in the UK and Victory University in the US.  The former includes law programmes (such as the LLB) and the latter included courses such as Christian ministry, psychology, education, biology, English and business to name a few.

On the 11th May, Mr Evans also met with Ms Heather Richardson, Human Resource Manager at Government of St Kitts and Nevis.

During the meetings, presentations and interviews, Mr Evans repeatedly indicated that the reason he started EFA was to “make global education a local process”.  He stressed that there was no difference between the qualification and curriculum you get via distance learning and on campus.

He also reinforced that the difference between the other universities and those offered through EFA is its availability of a local representative. He indicated that since 2008, Ms Sahely has been the local representative and she has since provided support to students through local inductions, workshops (using local resource persons in areas such as How to Search Online Effectively, How to Reference research work and Time Management) and social events.

Education for Advancement has academic partners from the UK and the US.

These include, in addition to those mentioned above, the University of Leicester (UK), Interactive Design Institute (IDI) (UK) and Ashworth College (US).  During the EFA president’s visit, the winners of the Graphics Design and Photography competitions were announced. Mr Shashi Wigley and Mr Daryl Charles were the winners of the graphics design and photography competitions respectively. These competitions were part of their launch of the IDI programmes.
