Private Sector Resolution on Crime

Press Release

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 20th 2011 - At a meeting held on Wednesday 18th May 2011 attended by representatives of the foIIowing Civi I Society or ganizations namely :-

     

    • St Kitts Nevis Chamber of lndustry and Commerce, St Kitts & Nevis Bankers Association
    • St Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, St Kitts Evangelical Association,
    • St Kitts-Nevis Hotel & Tourism Association, St Kitts-Nevis Contractors Association,
    • St Kitts Christian Council, Realtors of the Federation,
    • The St Christopher National Trust, St Kitts Taxi Association
    • St Christopher Children's Home & Service League,


    The following resolution was passed for transmission to the Government NOTING that Government recognizes how desperately bad the crime situation has become and the grave risk we face that it could destroy our economy; and NOTING that Government proposes a ten point initiative to escalate the fight against crime;

     


    BE IT RESOLVED that

     


    The meeting supports the initiative but recommends additional measures as follows:

     


    Speedy appointment of a new Commissioner of Police from outside the country with a local understudy.

     


    Engagement of two experienced police officers from outside the country, one to manage and upgrade the training of the Criminal lnvestigation Department in crime detection and prosecution and the other to assist in implementation of the proposed RICO legislation.

     


    Appointment of a new Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security with the capacity and experience to address the current crisis. Based on empirical evidence the meeting has no confidence in the capability of the current holder of that office to manage the implementation of the Government crime initiative.

     

     

     

    Bring in the RSS to assist the Police in the immediate implementation of the initiative.

     

     

     

    1. The Parliamentary Select Committee proposed should be mandated to report on a monthly basis to the public on the progress of implementation of the initiative.
    2. The meeting calls for the swift and decisive implementation of the lnitiatlve.
    3. The meeting calls on Government to facilitate the speedy completion of the work of the Crime Task Force appointed in 2009 and publication of their report as soon as it is delivered.
    4. The meeting recommends the appointment of a cross-sectoral, high powered commission to advise on and monitor implementation of the medium and long term solutions recommended by the Task Force and/or otherwise approved.
    5. The implementation of the initiative be closely monitored by Civil Society
