Construction work at the Fenton Bridge in Gingerland |
Charlestown Nevis (September 6, 2006) Officials of the Public Works Department in the Nevis Island Administration recently appraised themselves on the progress of various government developmental projects on the island. This is part of the Administration's thrust to provide better living conditions for the residents.
Speaking to the Government Press at Fenton Bridge, (one of the ongoing projects) Director of Public Works, Mr. Denzil Stanley expressed that work was being done on the culvert which had partially collapsed.
The bridge, which had been in existence for some 40 plus years, is getting a face lift. Mr. Stanley said that a decision was made to abolish the old structure and to build a new one, "so what we are seeing here is the actual work on the new structure."
"We expect that at the end of the day, we would have a much more durable, a much stronger structure which would be adequate enough to take the amount of water that passes through the ghaut, without causing any problems to traffic or pedestrians crossing."
While the overall work is being constructed by Surrey Paving and Aggregate Company of Jamaica, the supervisory aspect is being conducted by the Public Works Department on Nevis. The design for the culvert is part of an overall design for the third phase of the Island Main Road Project.
Meanwhile, the Director told the press that maintenance work had been on going at the asphalt plant by in-house staff at the Public Works Department and the Government Repair Shop. He also said that there was a lull in activities and that the department took the decision to carry out general work on the plant.
~~Adz:Right~~Mr. Stanley observed, once the plant is up and running the first road air marked to be done was the road in Camps that goes to the Hon Jean Harris home.
