Public urged to desist from setting abandon buildings on fire

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING a recent fire at the Historic Fort Thomas Hotel, the public is urged to desist from setting fire to buildings that may appear to be abandoned.

Fire Sub-Station Officer Everson Belle of the Basseterre Branch of the Fire and Rescue Services told SKNVibes that persons who set fire to abandon buildings and buildings that appear to be abandoned are unnecessarily causing the Fire Services to expend its resources.

On Wednesday (May 25), at about 3:41 p.m., members of the Fire and Rescue Services responded to a call of fire at the hotel, which has been abandoned for a number of years.

Belle said investigations revealed that the fire started in a room on the northwestern side of the building and spread to about 25 feet down a hall across a drop ceiling that was made out of plywood.

He however declared that the cause of the fire is unknown.

Belle also said that so far for year there have been a total of 72 fires in Basseterre alone.

He further said that this particular fire was in the Class A category, which means that it was started by material of wood, paper or cloth.
