Bill proposes no sale of liquor to persons under 18 years

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 30th 2011 (CUOPM) –  Another move by Government to protect persons under the age of 18.

     


    A month after passing legislation making it a criminal offence for persons under the age of 18 years to be admitted to nightclubs and other adult entertainment spots, the National Assembly will on Thursday this week, amend the Liquor Licences Act.

     


    Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas seeks legislative support making it illegal for children under the age of 18 years to be sold liquor.

     


    “In relation to children under the age of 18 years, the licensee, shall where he or she is in doubt as to the age of the person or is of the opinion that the person appears to be under the age of 18 years, require that person to show a valid form of picture identification to verify the age of the person,” the Liquor Licences (Amendment) Bill, 2011 proposes.

     


    It proposes the imposition of a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars for a first offence and a fine of five thousand dollars and the revocation of the license issued for a subsequent offense.

     


    The legal form of identification will include a valid and not expired passport, driver’s license, national identification card or social security card.
