BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 31st 2011 - No one was more surprised than Ms Flo Francis of Cedar Grove when she went to reap her backyard potatoes and uncovered this giant of a potato! It weighed a whopping 5 kg or approximately 12 pounds.
The other potatoes she reaped were of ‘normal’ size. So what was the explanation for this huge ‘roastable’ specimen? Ms Francis explains that it had three stems coming from it so possibly it could be a three-in-one or ‘triplet’ potato. Personnel at the Agricultural Department can no doubt explain this or how regularly giant potatoes like this appear in St. Kitts.
Whatever the explanation, we cannot help remembering that Saint Kitts was named "Liamuiga" by the Kalinago Indians who inhabited the island. This name, roughly translated, in English means "fertile land", a testimony to the island's rich volcanic soil and high productivity.
All this should help to encourage us to put our backyard space to good use. The present state of our economy demands it and we may be surprised at the sense of empowerment the practice brings... and this is “no small potato”!
