    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 8TH 2006 -
    Activities to mark the 23rd Anniversary of Independence by national associations in North America kicks off in Miami, Florida on Saturday.
    The St. Kitts and Nevis Association of Florida (SNAF) will hold its 8th Annual Independence Dinner and Ball under the distinguished patronage of the former Premier of Nevis and Elected Member of the Nevis Island Assembly and the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly, the Honourable Vance Amory.
     
    The Black and White Formal Affair at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel in Hialeah will honour King Elli Matt of St. Kitts and King Meeko of Nevis. SNAF will also honour Ron Burke and JAH-BABA, outstanding community award recipients.
     
    Proceeds from the Dinner/Dance, which will be preceded by a Cocktail, will go towards the Association's Scholarship Fund.
     
    SNAF said there will be guest appearances by Ms. St. Kitts, Ms. Caribbean Culture Queen, Ms. Broward Caribbean Carnival Queen and Ms. Florida Caribbean Queen.
     
    Winners of the 2006 scholarships will also be announced.
     
    The Dinner-Dance is being held under the theme "Preserving and Promoting our National Identity."
     
    In Toronto, the Nevis Cultural Association (NEVCAN) and the St. Kitts Canadian Association of Toronto jointly stage "A Cultural Explosion" to mark Independence 2006 on Saturday 16th September at the German Canadian Club Hansa.
     
    A Thanksgiving Prayer & Praise precedes the Cultural Explosion, which will feature music, masquerades, a fashion show, cultural performances and sale of traditional food.
     
    Organisers say the annual Independence Celebration shares "our culture, promotes our heritage, educates our youth, exposes our business community and develops unity among our nationals."
     
    Newly-appointed Deputy Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Hensley Daniel will be the Guest Speaker at the Dinner Dance Extravaganza of the Nevisian Association of Washington, D.C. on Saturday September 23rd.
     
    It will be held on September 23rd at the La Fontaine Bleu, 7963 Annapolis Road, Lanham, Maryland from 8 p.m. to 1:00 am.
     
    Music will be by Image Band, DC's top Soca Band led by Nevisian Loughton Sargeant.
     
    NEV-DC will honour Nevisian-born New York businessman, Mr Hillary Guishard.
     
    The event organisers said that a special prize will be a free-stay for two at the luxurious Caneel Bay Resorts in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands.
     
    NEV-DC's 2nd fundraising activity is to try and build a scholarship and assistance fund for Nevisians at home and abroad.
     
    Also on September 23rd, the St. Kitts and Nevis Cultural Association in Montreal has invited Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, to commemorate the 23rd Anniversary of Independence, with a Dinner and Dance.
     
    Prime Minister Douglas will be the guest speaker, at the event, which also marks the 36th anniversary of the St. Kitts and Nevis Cultural Association of Montreal.
     
    In New York, the Annual Independence Dinner-Dance will be held under the Distinguished Patronage of  the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas on Sunday October 1st from 6:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.
     
    ~~Adz:Left~~Described as an "Evening of Extravagance," the event will take place at the MAESTRO'S at 1703 Bronxdale Avenue, Bronx, New York.
     
    Music will be provided by the musical sounds of "Breakaway Brass" and there will be special acrobatic performance by  "The Calypso Tumblers."
