BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 10TH 2006 - Another independent newspaper in St. Kitts and Nevis is supporting the Denzil Douglas Labour Administration's consultative process to reform the Federation's electoral framework.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Mirror, a new weekly, in its editorial urged all stakeholders to participate in the process actively and with enthusiasm.
The newspaper noted that while the opposition People's Action Movement of Mr. Lindsay Grant has a right to question the framework under which the Electoral Process will take place, the very framework instituted by the governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party "allows the opposition party to question the process at every stage."
'This is a national and not purely a partisan event. It is also a historic moment and very critical. Electoral Reforms and the results thereof will determine the kind of governments that will rule the twin islands of St. Kitts and Nevis in future," said the Mirror's editorial, adding: "It is therefore important that citizens of the Federation and residents participate fully as committees seek views.
The editorial pointed out that the CARICOM and Commonwealth representatives at the Electoral Reform launching ceremony "were impressed by the broadbased consultation put in place which the committees are expected to adhere to."
The St. Kitts-nevis Mirror commended Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas "for allowing the Electoral Reform process to be carried out during his tenure in office."
"All stakeholders should participate in the Electoral Reform process actively and with enthusiasm so that a legacy and heritage can be left for current and future generations," urged the St. Kitts-Nevis Mirror, adding: "Electoral reforms that are free from flaws will ensure good governance if future Federation governments."
Support for the Government's Electoral Reform Exercise has come from two of the Federation's other independent newspapers, Sun St. Kitts-Nevis and the Leewards Times.
The Leewards Times said like all conscientious and fair-minded residents of the Federation, it "fully supports electoral reform."
~~Adz:Right~~Sun St. Kitts/Nevis said there is every indication that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government is very serious about electoral reform and "it is the right thing to do."
