St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas, has used the platform of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers meeting currently underway in Colombo, Sri Lanka to call for forgiveness of his country's sugar debt.

With the recent closure of the sugar industry, Prime Minister Douglas said the country has been left with a debt of more than US$150 million.

He called on financial agencies to come to his country's rescue.

"Normally we would demand that we be considered as one of the highly indebted poor countries but then we are told that we are a middle income country and so we do not qualify for that kind of consideration. This is the paradoxical situation we have found ourselves in," said Dr. Douglas.
