"SISTER" "SISTER" ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

By: Benjamin Mitcham
Recently there has been much talk and Town Flail Meetings regarding secession of Nevis from St. Kitts. A lot of the reasons for wanting to secede is for political reasons, but let us for a moment look over our shoulders beyond political expediency and look at the social issues. For as far back as I can remember the people of the two islands has been inter related. I can remember my grandmother talking about her sister living in Nevis. My first cousins’ father came to St. Kitts from Nevis to work, married my aunt and remained here until he died. Whatever the off-springs of that marriage think, the facts remain that their roots are in Nevis and like some of the demonstration placards are saying “All ah we is one”.

When you look around and see developed countries coming together, it makes one wonder why two small islands so closely related would want to separate. When the European war ended in 1 945, Winston Churchill advocated that the European countries should come together. That idea has resulted in the European Community as it is today. Further, a tunnel has been built between two of these countries which resulted in bringing them closer together. I myself as a soldier have been involved in the conflict of two communities in Northern Ireland. The aim of that struggle was to try and bring the two communities together in order that they can live in peace. When you talk to Kittitians and Nevisians they talk about going to church on Sundays and much about Christianity. Surely somewhere between all this rhetoric of church and the Christian way, we can find a way to remain together as one unit.
