    DEAR DIARY - The JUMBIE

    By Mutryce A. Williams

    Dear Diary
This your friend Ann Constantly Violated,
I am only twelve years old, as you know,
But here I am once again putting my troubles to you,
Because I have no one to talk to
I got up this morning in a cold cold sweat
    The clock said 3:21 a.m.

I felt a hairy, big, huge hand slide up my nightie
The other hand covered my mouth
    I thought I was having a nightmare
A husky, gravelly voice whispered, hush
Is me de Jumbie, hush, if you talk I would take you back with me.
You are a bad little girl and I am here to make you good.

    Scared and trembling,
Wanting to scream for help, my voice muffled,
I begged, Mr. Jumbie would you please, please stop!
I dont like this, I dont like this! I am a good girl.
The Jumbie planted his hands firmly on my neck,
Hush, I say hush, you cant hear hush, you being a
    Extra bad girl you know!

So I lay still and kept quiet,
Waiting for it to be over,
Waiting for the nightmare to end,
    Waiting for Mammy to yell,
Wake up Ann, Wake up girl, Wake up,
    But she didnt
    It was real, real, real,

My heart was racing and my eyes welled up with tears,
The tears began flowing and flowing,
    My whimpers turned into sobs,
Hush the raspy voice, say again, quite threatening this time,
Hush, I say hush, you want me to take you with me eh?

The evil hand explored and roved my panties,
    Then carefully over my bumps,
Little by little my innocence was being
Taken away from me, with each touch,
With each pinch, As the Jumbie had his way with me,
Lord that Jumbie bad, bad, bad, He brutal and wicked eh

    After the Jumbie left,
    I wet my bed,
In the morning Mammy cursed at me and said,
What the hell is wrong with you Ann?
This bed-wetting thing got to stop,
You stop wet you bed long time,
Now all of a sudden as if it is style and fashion,
You start, you start, Jesus peace wid you eh

Mammy the Jumbie made me do it!
    The Jumbie back again
A slap blazed across my face,
She said, Shut up, stop your lies,
I tired tell you to stop your lying,
Dont let me hear you say it again,
Who else you tell? Who else you tell?
Voice muffled, I whimpered, A Nobody!
    Good she said.

Bur Mammy is true, Sue was right!
She did see the bad Jumbie, now I seeing it too,
You see when my sister Sue used to live with us,
    She saw the Jumbie too,
When she left to live with Auntie he disappeared,

Then she looks across the table,
And stared the Jumbie dead in the face,
As he chewed and ate his mouth full!

These writings were ripped from the diaries and
hearts of the many children whom
I have counseled over the years. It was hard putting
Their feelings into words. Time and time again,
Child after child they have invited me in and taken
Me into a world that at times I wished that I had never visited,
These children live lives that no child should ever have to live.
They deal with problems that no child should have to deal with.

These children fight wars every day
    They carry heavy, heavy burdens.
These happenings do not make great bedtime stories,
Or gossip but they harsh cold realities. Child abuse is killing
Our children. They may seem alive to us but they are dead inside.
    These children need help.

SOCIETY THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE,
    PROTECT THEM AND NURTURE THEM,
THEY ARE INNOCENT, THEY SHOULD NOT BE RAPED,
THEY SHOULD NOT BE VIOLATED, THEY SHOULD NOT
BE DEPRIVED OF THERE CHILDHOOD, THEY SHOULD BE
PROTECTED FROM PHYSICAL, SEXUAL AND EMOTIONAL ABUSE,
    THEY SHOULD NOT BE NEGLECTED
