I am certain that there isnt a young soul in this land who hasnt by now perfected Tony Matterhorns Dutty Wine! I sure have, but thats beside the point! On a Friday evening one could go to the hot spot Inons and witness this Dutty Wine phenomenon for his or herself. The music is infectious. The lyrics call you to battle or to step up and show what you have got. The dance is rather energetic and passionate. Hmm, and to really dutty wine as Matterhorn chants out several times in his song, you must have ATTITUDE. This is the song of 2006; a party or a session isnt a session without Dis Dutty Wine or a Dutty Wine face off! Witnessing a Dutty Wine face off is like watching a Bull Fight in Spain or two cocks about to fight. You see while watching a Dutty Wine competition last Friday night, the thought came to me, look at this eh, here are my peers taking this dance and maybe even the sexual connotations behind the song so seriously, yet an issue like ELECTORAL REFORM, trust me there is no passion there whatsoever, this is indeed quite sad.
Young people, we are being given the opportunity to voice our opinion on an issue that will not only impact of our lives, but also chart the course of governance for our nation. It is rather disheartening that some of us are saying that we want no part of it. We say it is a political thing rather than a national thing. We say that we afraid of being labeled. You see we are not afraid to step up and Dutty Wine in public but yet we are afraid to standing in a town hall meeting, jot something in writing or seek an audience with the Electoral Reform Consultative Committee to have our voices heard on an issue thats of magnanimous important to our nations future. I have raised the topic with young people, asking what their views are on the issue. The majority is indifferent. The prevailing sentiment is What and why should I care anyway! There are those who have said, thats politics, thats real, real dutty wuk I want no part of it. Let them do what they want. It not going bother me either which way! I ask REALLY! Do you really think that we are going to be young and carefree forever? Dont the future or our country mean anything to us? Dont the rights and lives of our children and unborn children mean anything to us? Dont the value of our vote mean anything to us? Dont we perceive our rights as a citizen of this beautiful nation to be one of paramount importance? The responses always floor me. I ask, even if we perceive this issue to be real dutty wuk why cant we take a stab at it. Trust me doing Matterhorns doing dutty wine is much more complex. The ATTITUDE, INTEREST and PASSION that is exhibited for this Dutty Wine, I wish could be transfixed to the issue of ELECTORAL REFORM. Young people we need to be more passionate about it. We need to stand up and let our voices be heard on this issue. The thing is, that we are actually being given the opportunity to do so. Why not take a stab at it? I am certain that we all have an opinion, at least one opinion on the current electoral system, whether the current system is working or not. We must know what changes we would like to see. People it is our FUTURE! It is our LIFE. We have to participate in the process. We should let our voices be heard. We must stand up and be counted. Why are we willing to let others chart the course of our future? We exhibit our power, prowess and capabilities in all kinds of areas such as showing how well we can do Matterhorns Dutty Wuk!
