Nevis Island Administration
Cuban delegation meets Premier of Nevis, the Hon Joseph Parry at this office at Bath Plain
    Charlestown Nevis (September 28, 2006)
Cuban Ambassador based in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Her Excellency Ana Maria Gonzalez Suarez who was on a half-day visit to Nevis on Wednesday 27, paid a courtesy call on Premier of Nevis, the Hon Joseph Parry at his Bath Plain office.

The Cuban Ambassador sought to establish relations with the new Nevis Island Administration and to assure the Administration of her government's commitment.

Commenting after the meeting, Premier Parry noted that the meeting was fruitful and that they discussed several areas of cooperation between both governments.  They spoke about assistance in the areas of sports, health and agriculture.

"For instance, they have offered scholarships in nursing and they are trying to get Nevisians interested in taking up some of these scholarships, even this year," said Premier Parry.  "You have to do six months of Spanish first and then you get directly into the course for Nursing."

"We have discussed areas in health whereby we can have the Cuban doctors working here in Nevis.  Several Nevisians have gone to St. Kitts to get attention and they have indicated to me that at least 45 Nevisians have been sent off to Cuba for operations."

Cuban Ambassador Her Excellency Ana Suarez and Diplomatic Attache Varin Romirez met with Minister of Agriculture, the Hon Robelto Hector (r) at his office at Prospect.
'They are offering to have a clinic here in Nevis rather than Nevisians having to go over to St. Kitts so that's one of the areas we are looking at.  Another area is that Cuba has a world wide reputation in tropical medicine and so we will be working with them on that," the Nevisian Leader said.

The Ambassador also paid courtesy call on Minister of Agriculture, the Hon Robelto Hector where they discussed technical assistance in the area of agriculture.

Minister Hector requested assistance from the Cuban government in relation to the lethal yellow disease that is affecting the coconut trees on the island and the Cuban Ambassador offered assistance for conservation of energy through light bulbs.

She was accompanied by her Diplomatic Attaché Mr Varin Romirez.
