The 8 to 9 year olds are studying St. Kitts Past and Present. How the island has changed and so we looked at the various maps of St. Kitts, Grade Three teacher, Ms. Soretta Browne told the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM). She said the field trip was part of the annual Reading Week activities.
~~Adz:Right~~The visit was arranged so that students could have a look at the maps in the archive collection as part of their social studies programme. These included a 360-year-old original French map and other originals as well as enlarged photographs of maps that are in collections abroad. The decorative style of these early maps was pointed out and students, teacher and parent were intrigued by the names of landowners that were listed on the various maps, said Archivist, Mrs. Viki O Flaherty, who added that a great deal of interest was taken in the maps that had land in the Tabernacle area.
She said that the MacMahon Map of 1824 which showed the dominance of sugar on the physical environment of St. Kitts was of particular interest as it gives details of the location of sugar works and slave dwellings.
~~Adz:Left~~Ms. Browne said the next topic of discussion by the class is Government and how it works.
And so on the tour of Government Headquarters we met the Hon. Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and sat in on the meeting of the National Assembly, which was in progress, said Browne. The students and teacher were accompanied by parent, Ms. Wilma Crawford
