BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS: Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Tuesday night that the twin-island Federation can boast of a growing middle class created by his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government through its policy of land distribution, home ownership and distribution and access to university education.
At a "Face to Face" Town Hall Meeting to celebrate the second anniversary of the Labour Party's third term in office and to give account to the people for the stewardship of the Government, Prime Minister Douglas called for unity in transforming the economy and improving the standard of living of all citizens.
"The growth is not just taking place in areas like Earl Morne, Bird Rock and Half Moon Bay, but this growth and development is taking place in every village in this beautiful country of ours.
"Nothing pleases me more than seeing the children of working class families from all walks of life moving solidly and proudly up the social ladder. As a Government, we are proud of our record of transforming the social and economic landscape of our beautiful country.
As leader of this country, I say to you that the transformation will be solidified and given greater momentum with the closure of the sugar industry," said Prime Minister Douglas, whose Party, first elected to Government in July 1995, was re-elected in March 2000 and October 2004.
"I call on all of us to shoulder our responsibilities in this process of transforming our country, and I want to impress upon parents, guardians, teachers, and church leaders to work together to ensure that tomorrows generation is productive, disciplined and law abiding, so that this country could continue to experience growth while improving the standard of living for all our citizens," said Dr. Douglas with all Cabinet Ministers seated on the platform before a large gathering of residents at the Basseterre High School Auditorium.
~~Adz:Right~~Dr. Douglas, a five-term Parliamentarian told the audience as well as television viewers, radio listeners and internet patrons on the internet that the journey has not been easy as the Government has had to face many critical challenges.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to improve the lot of the ordinary man and woman, including those who have been displaced with the closure of the sugar industry, said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted that in the run-up to the last General Elections, which took place on the 25th of October 2004, our political detractors tried everything, even to this very day, to try to sidetrack us from our goal of improving the quality of life of our citizens.
Dr. Douglas stated that much has been done and the Government continues to pursue assiduously all the critical aspects that would enable the country to follow a path of socio-economic growth and development.
~~Adz:Left~~We have offered the Face-to-Face as an important means by which our citizens can have an open opportunity to question face to face all ministers of government about our work that is being done on your behalf, said Prime Minister Douglas.
