Carlisle Powell, Junior Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Public Utilities and Posts in the Nevis Island Administration. | CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (November 16, 2006) -- The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) on Thursday publicly recognised the contribution of Mr. William Archibald affectionately known as Willy Natta for his contribution to the development of water services on Nevis, in the wake of his passing on November 10, 2006.
In a televised tribute to Mr Archibald on NNC Channel 8, Junior Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Public Utilities and Posts the Honourable Carlisle Powell lauded Willy Natta for his 56 years of unbroken service to the people of Nevis till his retirement in 1995. He said Nevis owed Willy Natta a debt of gratitude and his service would not go in vain since the NIA would make every effort to ensure that his name would live on.
According to Mr. Powell, there is a saying at the Nevis Water Department that Water is Life but by extension it was safe to say that Mr Archibald brought life not only to the people of Rawlins and Gingerland but to all the people of Nevis, And for this we owe him a dept of gratitude.
During his time, Willy Natta was Head Water Man and was responsible for all the water coming out of our Nevis Peak source into the older 660,000 gallon reservoir at Stoney Hill. The Nevis Peak source was then our major source of water. To understand the magnitude of his responsibility, it must be said that pumping of water from the Zion area only began in 1967.
~~Adz:Right~~Willy Natta was also present and helped to supervise the construction of the newer 3000,000 gallon reservoir at Stoney Hill that was built in 1987. When the five miles of four inch pipes from the source at Stoney Hill was changed to a new six inch line in 1945, Willie Natta played a very important role in making sure the work was completed on time. Again, I hasten to remind you that trucks cannot go into the source. All pipes and materials had to be manually taken in and Willy Natta did more than his fair share of work, he said.
The Minister took the opportunity to extend condolences on behalf of the Water Department and the Nevis Island Administration to the family of the late Mr. William Archibald.
At the time of his passing at the Alexandra Hospital in Charlestown, Mr Archibald was a resident at the St. Georges Senior Citizens Home in Gingerland.
