Basseterre, St. Kitts (April 28, 2004): Demonstrating his commitment to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas who was unable to attend the New OECS Building Code Seminar, expressed his interest by writing a message which was read by Chief Physical Planner Mr. Ellis Hazel at the Opening Ceremony.

Prime Minister Douglas penned that: “Since taking office in 1995, my government made a commitment toward promoting the sustainable development of our built environment.  We continue to work with our private sector partners to ensure that we achieve the three interrelated goals of: economic development; social progress and environmental stewardship.”

He further wrote: “In anticipation of the challenges associated with economic growth and development, my government in 2000 updated the St. Kitts-Nevis Building Regulations; the St. Kitts-Nevis Building Guidelines, the St. Kitts-Nevis Building Code; and the Planning Act.

The move toward greater integration within the OECS sub-regional grouping has necessitated the introduction of common rules and guidelines upgrading efficiencies in the construction industry through human resource development is therefore a common goal among OECS member states.”

Prime Minister Douglas concluded that the seminar affords his government the opportunity to engage participants in meaningful discussions on the updating of the St. Kitts and Nevis building code.  He wrote that by working together tremendous steps can be taken toward meeting national development goals.
