"We would like to change the news headlines from, "Young man shot dead in Gang War" to "Youth help in renovating Community Center after natural disaster." These were the sentiments expressed by members of the executive on the new H.O.P.E. website which was built, designed and hosted by SKNVibes.com in late October.
H.O.P.E. which stands for Helping Our People Excel was formed by a group of young people who hope to be an agent of change for the development of youth in the Federation. The Executive body of the H.O.P.E. organization includes President Rohan Isles, Vice President Ron Daniel, Secretary Vincia Herbert, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Joel Pogson and Constitutional Chairperson Asure Dee Liburd.
H.O.P.E. was formed in August by President, Rohan Isles and Vice President, Ron Daniel with a view get people together who were passionate about youth being viewed in a more propitious light.
~~adz:right~~Daniel explained that their latest project is the H.O.P.E. Deserving Child Award which will provide hot meals to two students who are in the lower socio-economic bracket for which they are still seeking funding. Also, in December H.O.P.E. will be making a special contribution to the Nevis Change Centre to assist the women and children under their care.
"We just want to ensure that everyone has a good Christmas, especially the most vulnerable in our society. We find that these are the people that are often overlooked while the more fortunate live it up at Christmas time. We want to show that as young people we are concerned about the less privileged in our midst.
"We decided to launch HOPE because we felt that we as a group of young people owe it to ourselves and our nation to get up and do something about our society instead of simply waiting for someone or some government to do it for us. We know that there have been a lot of bad said about our youth but we know that there is quite a bit of good in them and we want to be able to remove the negative stigma that is always attached to them."
The next step for H.O.P.E. according to Daniel is to go into schools and give motivational talks to students to encourage them to stay focused on their academic careers so that they can become citizens which Nevis can be proud of.
Presently H.O.P.E. is looking for more members and all interested persons can apply online at www.hopenv.org .
