Charlestown Nevis (November 27, 2006) Nevis' Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CIC) Nevis Chapter, recognised and appreciated 11 teachers for their dedicated service to the teaching profession and for going the extra mile, at an award ceremony held in their honour at the Old Manor Hotel.
The function, entitled "The Extra Mile Teacher Recognition Award" was held on Saturday November 25, the first in a series to be conducted annually by the Education Department. Of the 11 teachers nominated from three categories, namely, preschool, primary school and secondary school, there was one winner from each category.
Ms Marigold Wilkinson of the Gingerland Preschool, Ms. Clair Lake of the St. Thomas' Primary School and Mrs. Maureen Adams of the Charlestown Secondary School were the first recipients of the prestigious award.
In welcoming all to the ceremony, Education Officer, Mrs. Avril Elliott expressed that the teachers nominated for the award epitomise commitment and perseverance to the teaching profession. She also said that the ceremony was symbolic, as it was the first in a series to celebrate the sterling contribution given by several admirable persons in the teaching fraternity.

Speaking at the function, Premier and Minister of Education, the Hon. Joseph Parry expressed gratitude to the teachers for their outstanding contribution to the education system. He deemed it a distinct honour to be a part of the ceremony and reminded the teachers that they were disciplinarians and that they must demand respect in their classroom.
The Education Ministers told the nominees that they were all winners. "Every one of you is a winner, the fact is, you have been nominated by your peers. The honour is yours tonight," he said. "See yourself as an outstanding contributor to education in this island of Nevis. See yourself as a performer, as an outstanding person that deserves accolades and deserve honour. I congratulate all of you."~~adz:Right~~
Principal Education Officer, Mrs. Jennifer Hodge in giving brief remarks, noted that the event was an historic occasion for the Department of Education. She extended congratulations to all the nominees and added, "By recognising teachers who go the extra mile, we create a more positive environment and encourage them to do a better job."
"Sometimes teachers do their work not expecting any rewards but when our work is recognised and appreciated we are forced to be aware of our behaviour and strive to set an example for others especially our students" she said.
The introduction of the nominees was presented by staff of the Education Department while the presentation of trophies and toast to nominees were done by Mrs. Adina Taylor, President of the Nevis Teachers Union.
Mrs. Venetta Moving, Permanent Secretary, Human Resources distributed the plaques while the winners were announced by Mr. Greg Phillip, Chairman of the Nevis Chapter of the CIC.
