Charlestown, Nevis (December 4, 2006) Deputy Premier, and Minister of Community Affairs, the Hon. Hensley Daniel admonished all to maintain peace and goodwill as the year comes to an end. He was at the time addressing the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday December 1, at the Memorial Square in Charlestown.
"By your presence, you come to join us in maintaining peace on earth and good will to all men," he told the gathering. "Christmas is a festival of light. Let us use the season to spread light, love and peace to all. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with us."
The Community Affairs Minister observed that Christmas was a time for reflection and called upon all to reflect on the year 2006. "First of all, we have to recognize in the reflection, that we were spared the ravages of hurricanes during the year 2006, not because we are better than the other people of the world, but because of God's tender mercies towards us," he said.
He expressed best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a bright and prosperous 2007 on behalf of the Premier and other members of the Nevis Island Cabinet and advised all to rid the society of the scours of violence and return to the good old days.
"Let us work together from here on in to bring about lasting peace and harmony in this our division of society," said Minister Daniel to the youth. "As your Minister of Youth, you can rest assure that myself and the other Ministers of Government will continue to be here for you."
"You will continue to command central place in the scheme of things. Remember you can all on us before you make a bad decision. Remember you hold the keys to a brighter Nevis and that is why in 2007, we are going to work towards promoting the programmes for youth and community development."~~Adz:Right~~
The ceremony, which was presented by the Department of Community Affairs and held under the distinguish patronage of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzroy Williams, saw a number of renditions from community groups and individuals, while the Area Representative for Charlestown, the Hon. Robelto Hector brought Christmas Greetings to his constituents.
"I am indeed delighted tonight to be part of this our lighting ceremony. In the past, I have participated here as a member of the Symphonic Band and some time as a mere spectator," he said.
"Indeed, tonight, I am happy to be here as your representative of Charlestown. It is the lighting of our first Christmas tree for the season and I do hope that during the invocation, you would have taken that time out to thank God for our spared lives and the joy of completing another year as an independent country."

The Area Representative noted that the ceremony opened the season of caring, sharing and happiness and asked that one use the time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. "Let us all remember it's a time of peace, a time of love and good will to all men. As the St. Pauls representative, I give you my affectionate greeting with every good wish for Christmas and the New Year when it comes," said Minister Hector.
The profiles of Mr. Fitzroy Williams and Mrs. Patricia Williams were read by Ms. Joyce Moven, Community Affairs officer, while Minister Daniel presented a plaque and gift on behalf of the Nevis Island Administration.
