Basseterre, St. Kitts (April 30, 2004): In relating their experience at the Caribbean Summit for Children on HIV/AIDS, Nikita Isles and Jermaine Huggins said that they have new perception on the disease and its spread.
Nikita Isles of the Washington Archibald High School said that she enjoyed the interaction with other young people from the region. She said she made lots of friends but particularly favoured the Barbadians, Bahamians and Dominican’s best.
Pertaining to HIV/AIDS Miss. Isles advised young people to get acquainted with what causes the disease thus learning how to prevent it, get advise from a trusted adult on different topics such as sexual feelings, personal problems and health issues.
Jermaine Huggins emphasized that there are three ways to slow down the spread of the disease.
This he said could be done by not having sex at an early age, upon become sexually active a condom should always be used and there is also the choice of waiting until marriage to have sex.
He also emphasized that persons who contract HIV/AIDS should still be treated as human beings with feelings. He said friendships should not end upon finding out that the individual has HIV or AIDS.
