Cable & Wireless has filed an application with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission which, if accepted, will lead to lower rates for calls to mobile phones. In its application, Cable & Wireless has applied to reduce mobile termination rates, the rates which telephone companies pay each other to terminate calls. If these rates are reduced, C&W will be able to offer lower rates to its customers to call mobile phones.
Cable & Wireless believes that Mobile Termination Rates are higher than they need to be, which has a direct impact on the rates our customers pay. We think it is unreasonable to ask a fixed line customer to pay four cents to call another fixed line customer, but pay seventy cents to call a mobile phone.
Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless, Ms Patricia Walters says, "We're listening to our customers. Our 'Voice of the Customer' surveys consistently show that the high cost of calls from a fixed line to a mobile phone is one of the greatest complaints of our fixed line customers - particularly from businesses. If Mobile Termination Rates are reduced, Cable & Wireless will be able to offer our fixed line customers lower rates to call mobile phones. "
