Work ongoing at the Special Education Unit at Prospect
    Charlestown Nevis (December 07, 2006)
Work is nearing completion on three Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) funded ventures under the Basic Education Project on Nevis despite a number of setbacks experienced by the contractors which forced the extension of the contractual arrangements.

Project Coordinator Mr. Deora Pemberton told Government Information Service on Tuesday December 06, that he was pleased with the status of the ongoing work at the new Special Education Unit in Prospect, the new St. Johns Primary School at Cole Hill and the expansion of the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS), notwithstanding the cement shortages and some critical changes in the design of the projects at Cole Hill and Charlestown.

The extension in the contract time was due to a number reasons, one of them being, ~~Adz:Right~~the shortage of cement which was experienced in April of this year. This set back the work by four weeks. Other contributing factors to the extension of the contract period were changes in works, such as the substitution of dividing walls from gypsum board to concrete block wall.

Some other designs in the ground work were also changed, for example, the design of this road a
    new road leading
to the school had to be changed to reduce the amount of fill needed to be cut from this area. This area is very steep and the initial design called for a steep road, he said.

Mr. Depra Pemberton Project Coordinator of the Basis Education Projects on Nevis funded by the Caribbean Development Bank
Mr. Pemberton explained that the contractors, China Jang Su Cooperation based in Trinidad, had already completed
all the structural works on the St. Johns Primary School and the CSS extension and were engaged in the finish of both buildings. He said as a result of the setbacks the contractual period was extended to February 2007, two months later than the initial deadline of December 2006.

Meantime, Mr. Pemberton took the opportunity to dispel misconceptions by the public that when completed, the facility would house the Sixth Form College.

I reiterate, this is the expansion of the CSS because there have been some misconceptions by the general public, that is the new Sixth Form College. This is just an expansion to the CSS, providing the facilities of lab and library that we are not available in the current school, he said.

Regarding the new Special Education Unit being constructed by local contractors LEVCO
The new St. Johns Primary School at Cole Hill under construction
Equipment and Rental Construction Co. Limited, Mr. Pemberton said that the project began in July 2006 and was initially scheduled to be completed in 12 months. However, according to the revised schedule given by the contractor, the building is expected to be completed in 3 ½ - 4 months.

He gave assurances that drainage concerns were being adequately addressed with the construction of earth drains which would serve to stair the water away from the school compound.
