Basseterre, St. Kitts (December 13, 2006): "Celebration" will be the theme as hundreds of children colourfully depict social occasions and ceremonies, modern and traditional festivals as well as upcoming national events for the 2006-2007 Carnival season.
During an interview with SKNIS, Director of Youth Geoffrey Hanley explained that Children's Carnival will commemorate the 35th anniversary of the national festivalal, highlight the popular St. Kitts Music Festival and mark the region's hosting of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. Graduations, social balls and community fairs will also be showcased in the parade affectionately dubbed "Kiddies Carnival."
Hanley said the inspiration for the troupe sections was developed from the carnival anniversary. "We thought it was important to highlight other events that we celebrate in St. Kitts so we tied in the history of celebrations," he said. "It is going to be quite an impressive show this year," Hanley stressed, adding that he expects approximately 450 children to take part in the costume segment. Combined with additional performers such as folklore groups and musicians Hanley estimated that some 1,000 people will participate in the street parade this year.
That event takes place during the Carnival Grand Parade on January 1. Persons not willing to wait that long to see the costumes can attend the display show which has been revived after a few years of hiatus.
~~Adz:Left~~ "It is very costly to produce Children's Carnival," said Director Hanley. "To ensure that everyone gets an understanding of what is being portrayed by the troupes and the individual costumes we will be performing on stage on December 30 at Netball City."
The show begins at 1:00 p.m. There is an admission fee of $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.
Hanley encouraged the general public to support the children by attending the event. He also called on parents and teachers to lend assistance to the youth who want to enter the parade.~~Adz:Right~~
Cable and Wireless has renewed its role as the primary corporate sponsor of Children's Carnival. Director Hanley saluted the company for its continued support of youth development in St. Kitts and Nevis. The Department of Youth had publicly thanked Cable and Wireless on November 28 when a plaque was presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Youth Hon. Sam Condor.
