With the onset of the New Year we hit the streets to ask you:

What type of New Year's resolutions will you be making this year and why do you think that New Year's resolutions are important?

"I do not have any set resolution per se, just better health, educate myself and get my life in order. Resolutions are important but still we live day-to-day hoping for the best."
    Nicole Elliot

"For this New Year I would like to lower my alcohol drinking and save more money.
    Sometimes
I go overboard when I drink too much so I want to change that.  I just want to see a whole bigger life because every year you get older so you just have to look forward for the future.  Right now I looking to have a family, maybe in the New Year I will have five children."
    Mackiah Webbe

"In general a lot of things need improving in the New Year.  I hear there is an electricity bill which is going to go up and with this the salary has to go up too.  So the people who are in charge of our island need to look at this!"
    Bell Kispit

"My New Year's resolution is to be nicer to people and to be a nicer person in everything that I do.  New Year's resolutions
can help to benefit young people and the person themselves.  I am a Christian and I would like people to see the Jesus in me and I would like to bring a lot of young people to Christ by witnessing and ministering to them."
    Melita Swaby

"For the New Year I would like to make some very good resolutions to make sure that everything goes well.  I am just hoping for the best to come.  Resolutions are important because it is a good thing to have goals and to endeavour to do good.  I just hope that everyone co-operates with the Boss upstairs and works hand-in-hand with Him and not pull down each other."
    Jevon Biset

A New Year has reared its opportunistic head and it has us all on our toes as we move on to a new phase in our lives.  We all want to change for the better, yet how many will be able to sustain these changes?  In our quest for self enhancement how many of us have actually made concrete plans to ensure that our resolutions last well into the New Year?

When making New Years resolutions always start off with a specific long term goal and figure out what steps you have to take to reach that goal.  After you have set your plan set realistic, short term goals which allow you to take baby steps toward your goal.  Ensure that your goal is reachable.

~~Adz:Left~~Dont try to conquer the world all at once, assess your present situation and make resolutions that you can realistically keep not only throughout the New Year but also through life.  Have a realistic outlook because change does not happen overnight and even if you do not reach your desired goal right away understand that change is a process.

If you really want to change a behavior you need to stop and analyze what factors are really stopping you. Who is standing in your way of being a more disciplined person? More often than not you are your own biggest obstacle.

Self-motivation is a key factor in change.  If you are not strongly motivated to change, then chances are you will not.  Successful behavior-change comes from a desire to change, which in many cases is related to risk perception and an appreciation of the benefits of change.

Long-term change is a difficult process and as individuals we need to understand that relapses are normal.  Even in difficult circumstances, you need to be convinced of your ability to change; we all possess the inner resources necessary to change.  Have a positive attitude about your ability to change, as attitude is a major factor in your quest.

At the end of the day you are responsible for your own well-being.  As you move forward into the New Year, be your best self.  Sustained growth comes by optimizing your potential.  Optimize your potential by presenting your best self every day and improving yourself constantly.  Life is a cycle of growth; if we waste it on stagnation then what will we have to show for it at the end of the day?
