(Charlestown; Nevis): On Wednesday afternoon Superintendent Joseph Liburd proudly announced an overall 7.2 per cent decrease in crime for Nevis in 2006.

Liburd explained that 2006 was extremely successful and productive for the police in terms of the realization of the year end goals set by the Nevis Police Corps.

He said that they have been able to realize their goal in terms of crime fighting in 2006 and their main goal was to increase our detection rate while also decreasing the number of reported crimes.

In 2005 there were 291 reported crimes with 46 per cent detected.

"In 2006 I am please to announce that we had a reduction in reported crimes by 7.2 percent. A total of 270 reported crimes for 2006 and an increase in our detection rate where it has improved from 46 per cent in 2005 to 50 per cent in 2006," he said. "There was a reduction in crime and an increase in the detection of these crimes."

He attributed this success to hard work and dedication on the part of the Nevis Police Corps coupled with the co-operation of the general public in terms of reporting crime.

"I would attribute the increase in detection to intelligence by the police as part of our policing plan for 2006-2007. Throughout the year 2006-2007 we had the theme 'Success through Partnership' and we were able to get some invaluable assistance from the general public in terms of passing on information to the police and we believe that this greatly helped us to achieve the improved detection rates," the Superintendent said.

He continued: "Also we have seen some hard work done by the police officers in Nevis and this greatly helped us to achieve the reduced detection rates."

Looking to the future, Liburd intimated his expectation of greater challenges however he assured the general public of the commitment of the Nevis Police Corps to their general safety and well-being.

"In 2007 we expect greater challenges especially with the onset of World Cup 2007 as we expect to have a greater amount of visitors in Nevis. It will be challenging for us but we are still intending to work just as hard and even harder. It is our intention for 2007 to further reduce crime to maintain and better our detection rate."
