(Charlestown; Nevis): Barely ten days into the New Year and the Charlestown Police Corps has recorded a whopping six vehicular traffic accidents.  Therefore we thought it was high time to hit the streets to ask you:

Why do you feel some Nevisian drivers feel the need for excessive speed?

"Some drivers speed because they are late for work or late for the boat or late for an appointment.  I think they get into accidents because the instructors teach them to drive too slowly and when they get on their own they cannot control the vehicle and they get into accidents.  There is not really a need for speeding in Nevis, however, some of the drivers drive too slow so that they actually hold up the traffic by driving below the speed limit that the law enforces.  Some people just stop when they feel like stopping like they are in their bedroom where they can just walk around and stop anywhere without using the proper indicators! "There is really no need for speeding in Nevis.  If you want to get somewhere on time you should practice leaving the
house on time.  There is nowhere in Nevis that you cannot get to in half an hour."

"Guys feel that speed turns girls on and so they speed to get their attention.  They just like to show themselves and not think about the lives that they are endangering.  Some of the drivers are just young drivers and when you are young you have an ego and men's egos get excited knowing the power the machine has."

"I think that these young guys who are driving around need to think about the young people
who are walking the streets and start to think about someone besides their self for a change.  We have the new generation coming up and we are killing them off and the ones that do survive by the time they get old they would have learnt to drive recklessly and would kill off those who are remaining.  We need to preserve our generation.  What is the reason for all the speed?  Ah Nevis we deh!"

Contrary to popular belief the world will not run away and leave us if we do not go around speeding like crazy maniacs.  What we may feel is a rush to keep up - may just be a lack of patience.  A lot of us have been bred and nurtured into a habit of getting instantaneous results.  Instant dinner, instant messages, instant gratification and when it comes to driving, we want to arrive at our destination instantaneously.

However, based on the surge of traffic accidents that we have been having, this fast moving trend is proving to be hazardous to the health of our populace.  Maybe we need to stop to consider what we are searching for in the frenzy of rush and understand that we are really rushing past life.  By the time we catch ourselves it may be too late.

Simple as it may sound, life is for the living.  When last did you watch the sunrise or tell someone special that you love them or even just take a minute or two to reflect on your goals and aspirations?  I think if we were to take a minute to stop sometimes we would realize that we are moving in a totally different direction than that which we started out.

A little introspection is all it takes to get back on the right path towards our happiness.
