Charlestown Nevis (May 12, 2004) -- Perennial Nevisian entrant in the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association’s Foundation for the Caribbean Children’s Environmental Poster Competition, Kelron Liburd of the Gingerland Secondary School has won again.
At a short ceremony held in the school’s auditorium Wednesday morning, Director of Research and Development in the Ministry of Tourism, Ms Elmeader Brookes, presented a cheque of US$200.00 to Kelron for being the Nevis winner in this year’s competition in the presence of his father, who is also the school’s principal, Mr Conrad Liburd, and cheering school students and faculty body.
Kelron is the winner in the senior category for students between ages 13 and 16.
The Nevis winner for the junior category, 12 years and under was Kris Liburd, a form one student at the Charlestown Secondary School, who received his cheque of US$200.00 from Ms Elmeader Brookes on Monday.
By their receiving their cheques at this stage, it means that the Nevis entrants did not place in the regional finals, and what they received were consolation prizes for being the winners at the country level. Had their entries won the top regional prize, they would have travelled to Miami, Florida for the gala awards.
Ms Brookes pointed out that Kelron has entered the poster competition each year since 1998, with the exception of 1999 when entry forms for Nevis were received late. In all the years that he has entered the poster competition, the young artist has emerged the winner in Nevis, and would have won regional awards in some of the years.
Kelron entered the competition for the first time in 1998 while in grade three at the Gingerland Primary School, and his entry was the best in the Caribbean in the junior category, which earned him US$3000.00 and a trip to Miami in the company of his father. In 2002 he took the regional third place, which earned him US$1,000.00, while in 2003 he earned US$1,500.00 for placing second regionally.
