Mr. Edson Elliott Principal of the Charlestown Secondary School in Nevis
    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 23, 2007) --
The faculty at the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) in Nevis say they will not be daunted by the challenge of a shortened second term and planned to execute all the scheduled activities as they would during the regular term.
Education officials were forced to shorten the second term for all schools in the Federation and extend the third term to make allowances for the upcoming Cricket World Cup matches in St. Kitts and Nevis in March.

School Principal Mr. Edson Elliott told the Department of Information in a recent interview, that the school, over the nine week term, would undertake shortened versions of its regular activities.

We believe that our programmes are all important and so we are finding that difficulty in removing any one programme from the schedule. What we have decided however, is the cut back on some of these programmes and we will continue with our usual programmes but just use a shorter version of the programme, he said.

Mr. Elliott said it was felt that if any activity was deleted from the term, the needs of some students would not be met since the programmes are tailored to reach as many students as possible.

He explained that though it would be a challenge the staff at the school have given their commitment to work extra hard in reaching the schools goal to reach as many students and to hold as many activities as it possibly can and as such they would not be deterred.

According to Mr. Elliott, traditionally the CSS had used the second term as a sporting term however in spite of the absence of the two weeks of heats that would lead to the Sports Day the school would try to concentrate on sporting activities in order to give the students the opportunity to develop and use their athletic ability.

In keeping with the schools plan of activities, the English Week commenced today January 22 and will conclude on the 26th.  During that week, students would be sensitised about the importance of English. The highlight of that week would be our annual Spelling Bee contest.

From January 29th to February 2nd, the school will host a Modern Languages Week when the importance of the Modern Languages in particular French and Spanish would be highlighted.

Also in February, persons exposed to certain life skills would be brought to the school to interact and to pass on information to the students.  During the week students of the Third Form would be exposed to a number of motivational talks.

The History Week will follow during which efforts would be concentrated on the importance of history.

In March from the 1st to the 4th, the school plans to take part in the annual Leeward Islands Debating contest which is scheduled to take place in Montserrat.  Mr. Elliott said that the school, which made it to the finals last year, planned to send a contingent of students and that students were already motivated because the school was a finalist last year.

The students are preparing to be ~~adz:Left~~there and we are hoping to send a contingent of approximately 37 persons. We are in the process of raising funds to get us there. The projected amount is $38,000 and we are hoping that we will be able to achieve that amount so that our students may be exposed to the 2007 Leeward Islands Debating Competition, he said.

The schools one-day Sports Day is planned for March 1st and on March 3rd will hold its popular Miss CSS contest which he said had already begun to generate much interest. He said some female students had already indicated their interest to participate in the contest.

The Term winds down on March 9th which would be the final day at school
