Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry voices disapproval of increases Cable TV services
    Charlestown Nevis (February 20, 2007)
-- At a press briefing at his Bath Plain Office on Monday 19th February, Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry, announced the re-establishment of a Public Utilities Commission.
He indicated that since the previous Commission only had a life of 3 years, that life would have expired a long time ago and a new Public Utilities Commission had been put in place.

"The new commission has as its chairman lawyer Jeffrey Nisbett.  Other members are Rawlinson Isaac, Hastings Daniel, Stedroy Pemberton and Lyra Richards.  The secretary to the commission is Vaden Jones," the premier announced.

The first matter for the Commission to address is the proposed increase in Cable TV rates on Nevis. The Premier stated that the local cable provider Caribbean Cable TV of Nevis had written to the Nevis Island Administration [NIA] and more specifically to him advising of a planned increase rate, effective 1st March 2007.

Premier Parry further stated that "the NIA does not approve any increase in any cable TV rates at this time.  I would wish at this time to thank Caribbean Cable TV for its services, but at the same time, we have to make sure that any decision that is made will affect the people of Nevis. The cost of living must be studied, must be done properly through the correct channels.~~adz:Right~~

We do want the people of Nevis to be calm and to understand that rates cannot be increased in the country without the approval of its government," he said.

The Commission would convene at the earliest opportunity and would advise the government as to the way forward.

The proposed increase rates in Cable services comes just 3 years after, the islands sole Cable provider imposed increases to subscribers.
