BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 21ST 2007 - Chile's new Ambassador to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Alphonso Silva, has praised St. Kitts and Nevis' Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas for improving the economy and promised to the help of the South American nation in the continued diversification of the economy.
Ambassador Silva met with Prime Minister Douglas shortly after presenting his credentials to Governor General, His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian.
The Chilean diplomat commended Prime Minister Douglas for the bold decision in closing the loss-making sugar industry and developing the tourism, non-sugar agricultural and financial services sectors.
He said his Government in Santiago is willing to assist St. Kitts and Nevis in identifying alternative crops of improved fruits and vegetables for the local and export markets.
"I am very impressed with the economy and your Government must be commended for the over US$8,000 GNP, which is incredible compared to 10 years ago," Ambassador Silva told Prime Minister Douglas.~~adz:Right~~
The Chilean diplomat also expressed thanks and appreciation to the Federation's Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, for supporting the Chilean candidate for the post of Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS).
In welcoming Ambassador Silva to St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister Douglas said his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Government welcomes the improved bi-lateral relations between St. Kitts and Nevis and Chile and recalled his brief meeting with the Chilean President Her Excellency Michelle Bachelet, during last year's European Union-Latin American and Caribbean Summit in Austria.
