BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 21ST 2007   Chiles President Her Excellency Michelle Bachelet is committed to maintaining and strengthening the relationship between her South American republic and the nations of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

So says Chiles Ambassador to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Alphonso Silva, who paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Ambassador Silva told Prime Minister Douglas, that the Chilean President, a medical doctor like him, is expected to deepen the existing relationship with the Caribbean Community during a meeting of the Rio Group in Georgetown, Guyana, in March.

President Bachelet intends to meet with the CARICOM Secretary General, Dr. Edwin Carrington to explore the possibility of increased cooperation, said the Chilean diplomat.

He said Chile intends to allocate US$1 million to the Secretariat to assist the countries of regional integration movement.

The Rio Group is an international organisation of Latin American states. It arose in 1986 as an alternative body to the Organisation of American States during the Cold War, since that body was dominated by the United States. ~~adz:Right~~

The Rio Group does not have a secretariat or permanent body, and instead relies on yearly summits of heads of states.
