It's a day when the young and young at heart receive chocolate and roses and similar combinations, but Valentine's Day 2007 also brought gifts of cheer for some senior citizens in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Over a dozen senior citizens and other recipients were granted their wishes on Valentine's Day when a team of Cable & Wireless executives and members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga trekked around the island making stops in Basseterre, Conaree, Cayon, Molyneaux and Sandy Point.

They were mostly female, some were confined to their beds others were visibly active, but all happily received a combined team of Cable & Wireless executives and members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga. The occasion was the third annual Make a Wish for the Elderly Project, now dubbed "Valentines Day for the Elderly."

The very grateful recipients showered praises upon the team, thanking Cable & Wireless and the Rotary Club of Liamuiga for remembering them on a day that is normally celebrated by "young people." So happy were some of the recipients to be favoured with a personal delivery by busy executives as described by one of them, that in a few instances they were moved to tears.

A few volunteered their stories of love and marriage, but none could surpass the proud story shared by one couple that has been married for 62 years. Still evidently happy, the couple thanked the members for the visit, and hoped that they would be included in next year's programme.

Gifts of fruit baskets, bouquets, food hampers, a trip on the Scenic Railway and personal items were some of the wishes that were submitted in response to a full-page ad advertising the programme. A very interesting request of a taxi ride to church for two Sundays was upgraded to a limousine ride and was received with much delight by the octogenarian.

A few recipients were repeat beneficiaries from this programme which is now in its third year, and were especially grateful that they were again remembered. Besides the tangible gifts presented, members of the Rotary Club also took the opportunity to grant the unspoken wishes of a few of the seniors and in this regard the entryway of one lady's house was mowed the following day.

In another instance, a note was taken to affix a handrail to the steps of a couple's house in Cayon. In Nevis gifts were presented to four senior citizens by staff of Cable & Wireless
