Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 26, 2007): The Department of Culture is helping musicians produce
a more professional product by acquiring the skill of reading a music (chord) sheet.
Music Specialist Nigel Williams told SKNIS that 15 individuals completed a half-day workshop on chord sheet reading held on Saturday at the Basseterre High School.

He noted that this workshop was important to ensure more persons can be successful in the industry, which should in turn boost interest in the field.

"Most persons in St. Kitts who know how to play music are self taught and may not know how to read a chord sheet so we are trying to equip them with those skills," he explained.~~adz:Right~~

Participants were introduced to the musical staff, the treble cleft, bass cleft, time signatures and key signatures as well as other basic rudiments of music theory. The session was facilitated by Mr. Williams and Cliffette Isaac, a popular calypso arranger and sound engineer.

At the end of the workshop, participants were able to write a chord sheet and were encouraged to continue practicing. They were also asked to share the new acquired techniques with other musicians in their community or organization.

Williams disclosed that the Department of Culture will have similar workshops and sessions on other music related areas in the near future.
