Erasmus Williams - Press Secretary
BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (JANUARY 12TH 2004) – Top local artist Rosie Cameron-Smith said Saturday that Kittitian Sprint King Ambassador Kim Collins’ moment of triumph at the recent IAAF Games in France has provided an inspiration for young people in the Federation.

“After Kim won the race in Paris at the World Championships, I wanted to paint something and give it to him, just to celebrate his stupendous achievement. He has provided such an inspiration for all the young people, particularly on this island, so that all young people can go out and achieve. Anything is possible,” said Cameron-Smith, at a brief ceremony at the Spence-Cameron Art Gallery at which a framed copy of the historic event was presented to Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas.

Large and small copies of the painting have been produced with Kim’s signature and are on sale at the Spencer Cameron Art Gallery on North Independence Square Street.

In brief remarks, Prime Minister Douglas said he was humbled by the presentation of Kim in his moment of glory. Dr. Douglas thanked Mrs. Cameron-Smith who has been one of the Federation’s foremost painters.

“She has not only painted the beautiful sceneries of this country, but now she has given us something that all Kittitians and Nevisians the world over will be proud of – our own champion, our hero Kim Collins in his full glory after winning the world championship,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

The Kittitian Sports Ambassador praised Cameron-Smith “for doing a fantastic job in having me with the sugar cane fields and the mountains.”

“I really am pleased with this picture, because most of my pictures do not do me justice. She did a great job,” said Ambassador Collins. He said that by looking at it one will “remember the moment that it really represents in hearing the National Anthem and seeing the National Flag being raised and St. Kitts and Nevis being the proudest nation in which all Kittitians and Nevisians should treasure for the rest of their lives.”

He told Prime Minister Douglas he wishes St. Kitts and Nevis will have more proud moments in the future.
