CEO of Cable and Wireless, Ms. Pat Walters, and the Minister of State wit responsibility for Sport, Tourism and Culture, Hon. Ricky Skerritt, sign agreement.

    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
Cable and Wireless, the leading telecommunications operator in St. Kitts and Nevis, signed a significant agreement with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, and officially solidified their partnership with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Cable and Wireless, Ms. Patricia Walters and the Minister of State with responsibility for Sport, Tourism and Culture, Hon. Richard Skerritt, on Thursday, March 8th, at the companys headquarters, Needsmust.

As part of the agreement, Cable and Wireless provides leading edge information and mobile technology and cash to the LOC, valued at an estimated EC$ 1 million.

In return for their mammoth contribution to the hosting of ICC Cricket World Cup matches at the newly renovated Warner Park, Cable and Wireless has first preference to any permanent branding at the posh new facility (to the value of the contribution). The arrangement lasts for the next ten years.

CEO Walters said she was extremely pleased to be a signatory to the agreement on behalf of her company, and it underscores the very healthy existing relations between her company and the Ministry of Sport and Culture.

She also noted that her company feels obligated to contribute to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the region as a whole.

Ms. Walters said her company took pride in giving patrons the opportunity to experience the very best in leading edge technology and added that she was very confident the availability of such, especially during the Cricket World Cup, will definitely contribute significantly to the success of the event.

Minister of State with responsibility for Sport, Hon. Richard Skerritt, said he was very pleased with the partnership of Cable and Wireless and the Ministry of Sport and the LOC.

He revealed that there were times when the Government did not budget for certain expenses incurred during the preparation for this upcoming Cricket World Cup, and they approached Cable and Wireless, and without any prompting, the company extended their services, with the provision of cash and services.
Representatives from Cable and Wireless, the Ministry of Sport, Culture and Tourism, and the LOC, share a photo opportunity at the signing of the agreement.

Minister Skerritt said that one of the things that particularly impressed him is the fact that Cable and Wireless provided the cash and services prior to the signing of the agreement on Thursday, operating in mutual respect and the confidence of a handshake before.

This commitment to honouring the partnership without a written agreement speaks highly about the commitment of Cable and Wireless to local development, underscores how dependable the company is and emphasizes the value that both partners place on the relationship, Minister Skerritt disclosed.

The Sport Minister also noted that he was impressed that Cable and Wireless did not ask for any outrageous demands for their contribution, but on the contrary expressed business humility in their requests for returns.

The signing of the agreement was witnessed by a number of top officials from Cable and Wireless, including Mr. John Boyle, Chief Executive Officer for the Eastern Caribbean Area, Chairman of the local Cable and Wireless Board, Mr. Joseph Edmeade, and a number of other Board members.

In the Ministry of Sports corner was Mr. Lloyd Lazar, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Tourism and Culture and the Chairman of the LOC, Mr. Charles Wilkin, Q.C., who said he often had to pinch himself, when he sees how things have fallen into place for the Cricket World Cup in Warner Park will be played on March 14th.
