BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 12TH 2007 (CUOPM) - The West-Basseterre By-Pass Road is an integral component in the Federation's developmental strategy and will not only meet the critical objective of reducing traffic congestion in the heart of Basseterre, but will also help to facilitate the opening of new areas for residential purposes and commercial enterprise.

"Tackling this round-a-bout first was essential, because it was necessary, as a matter of urgency, to alleviate much of the problems associated with the old structure that our own road users were experiencing," said Prime Minister Douglas on Sunday.~~adz:Right~~

He said the facility is the result of months of engineering and construction that now gives an enhanced safety, greater connectivity and better traffic flow, as well as the elimination of flooding that followed heavy rainfall in this particular area.

Prime Minister Douglas used the occasion to express the countrys appreciation to the hand-working people who toiled day and night to complete this section of works in time for the full convenience of all citizens and road users when traffic flow in this area is expected to be higher than normal.

"In starting the construction of the West-Basseterre By-Pass Road, it was absolutely necessary to tackle this round-a-bout first to ensure that this area could competently handle the added traffic demand.

We must commend, therefore, the designers and engineers Halcrow and the contractors PROTEC, as well as all the other individuals and companies that have contributed to the completion of works here on time and as planned," added Dr. Douglas, who commended the Ministry of Works, Public Utilities, Transport and Posts led by the Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin and supported by his Permanent Secretary, Mr. Oaklyn Peets and the Heads of Department and all of the workers of this Ministry who have made today possible.
