    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
Cable and Wireless, the leading mobile and land-line telecommunications company in St. Kitts and Nevis, has given EC$20, 000 to the Fort Street Beautification Project.

The cash donation took place during a brief ceremony at the office of Mr. Ernest Amory, Chairman of the Project, earlier today, Wednesday. Chief Executive Officer of Cable and Wireless, Ms. Patricia Walters handed over the cheque on behalf of her company.

"We are fully aware that being a corporate citizen is not just about making profit, but being able to fulfil the obligation of giving back to the community," Ms. Walters said, while handing over the cheque.

She indicated that once her company was approached about making the donation, it was automatic that they responded in the positive, as they feel an onus to help beautify and maintain the prestige of St. Kitts and Nevis, and especially the Fort Street area, which is the commercial centre of the country.

The vibrant young CEO also noted that her company, which is keen on providing leading edge technology to residents of the country, have willingly stepped up to the plate every time they have been called upon to contribute to community building.

Upon accepting the cheque, Mr. Amory expressed his utmost appreciation, on behalf of the Beautification Committee, for the very significant contribution that Cable and Wireless has made to the project.

He also commended the company for being one that has a very amicable, longstanding and positive relationship with the local government, which in turn has yielded significant results throughout. Amory that the money will be used to procure additional lighting for the Fort Street area.

He revealed that his Committee and the local Government, through Minister of Public Works, Utilities and Posts, Dr. The Hon. Earl Asim Martin, are already entertaining the idea of expanding the beautification project, to include West Independence Square Street and Church Street, the administrative centre of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Fort Street has been bedecked with ornamental lamps and potted plants, to nicely complement the neatly fashion-blocked sidewalks. The change has received extensive positive reviews from the general public and visitors alike and stakeholders have said that it not only enhances the tourism appeal but has improved the aesthetics of the area.

Presently, several persons have embarked on an initiative to have Fort Street remain closed to vehicular traffic and continue to be an open boulevard for pedestrians permanently, through the soliciting of signatures.
