    CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (April 16, 2007) --
Chief of Staff at the Alexandra Hospital in Nevis Dr. Cardell Rawlins, expressed the hope that the personal relationships forged with the Taiwanese Mobile Medical Team which conducted several clinics on Nevis over three days will bear fruit for the benefit of Nevisians.
Dr. Rawlins made the comment during an interview with the Department of Information on April 13, 2007 while he spoke on the impact of the visit.

The visiting medical team which was headed by Dr. Jeffrey Chen comprised Specialists in Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine, Urology, Dentistry and Surgery, two Intensive Care Unit Nurses and a Pharmacist. The team visited Nevis from April 8 - 11, 2007.

"The most important aspect, to me, of the Taiwanese Medical Mission here, is the possibility of personal relationships we may establish. I am hoping that out of thee personal relationships between the health professionals from Taiwan and the health professionals from Nevis, that we can have some future cooperation and benefit to Alexandra Hospital and hence the people of Nevis.

~~adz:Left~~"The clinics that were put on by the Taiwanese Medical Mission were very well attended in particular the Urological and Surgical clinics, the Paediatrics clinic and the Internal Medicine clinic they were very well attended. Our people here in Nevis took the opportunity to avail themselves of the services provided and that was not a surprise, that was expected," he said.

The Taiwanese Medical Team also donated a quantity of regular drugs which Dr. Rawlings explained had been placed in the Pharmacy at the Alexandra Hospital for distribution to the population of Nevis over time as the medications were prescribed by their physicians.

Notwithstanding, Dr. Rawlins spoke of his discontent  with regard to the Alexandra Hospital's little or no benefit from the generosity of the Taiwanese Government where health care was concerned but remained hopeful that the visit would change things around.
Health Minister the Hon Hensley Daniel takes a closer look at the Taiwanese gift of regular drugs for use at the Alexandra Hospital.

"We can have some benefits in health because they [Taiwanese] have been very generous with medical supplies over the years, unfortunately we here in Nevis has seen very little if any of it. I am hoping now that they have been here to Nevis, have seen Alexandra and have heard of our discontent with this arrangement that they will improve and hence we will see some benefits from the Taiwanese generosity in the matter of health care," he said.

Meantime, Minister of Health on Nevis the Hon. Hensley Daniel during a brief ceremony ahead of the clinics had made the point that the Nevis Island Administration took health very seriously. He said that it must be regarded in a developing country as a priority and as such the development of partnerships with Taiwan, was one way of addressing health care and providing improved and more efficient care on Nevis.

He said the Administration's health care policies was driven by prevention and care and he looked forward to the diffusion of new ideas into the medical system, in an effort to improve care and to ensure that Nevis received the best quality of care available.

Mr. Franklyn Chen, Counselor at the Embassy of China/Taiwan based in St. Kitts during ceremony ahead of the clinics, indicated that the Team had worked closely with local counterparts in St. Kitts to conduct similar sessions at the Joseph N. France Hospital.
