Basseterre, St. Kitts ( May 01, 2007): The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced a bold new plan to overhaul its land distribution and housing policy in a manner that would empower nationals.
Minister of State for Information and Technology and Minister responsible for Cabinet Briefings Hon. Nigel Carty unveiled the progressive plan coming out of a highly decisive meeting of Cabinet on Monday.

The new land distribution policy encapsulates the identification of specific sites for the distribution and pricing of land to be sold to nationals in a transparent manner and with a view to expediting the application process.

Three new programmes have also been established including one to assist owners of starter homes in making structural additions to these homes; another that targets sugar workers and the final being the construction of 1000 homes for low income families.~~adz:Right~~

The programme for sugar workers will see the construction of 300 homes for those ex-sugar workers who are not yet home owners. This project along with the project for starter homes will be funded by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Low income families who have an interest in owning an affordable home are asked to submit a completed application form to the National Housing Corporation as soon as possible.

The meeting of Cabinet also discussed the privatization of several government assets. This discussion will continue at a subsequent meeting.
