Charlestown Nevis (January 20, 2004) More Nevisians would soon be able to
improve on their abilities from the St. Kitts and Nevis and Cuba Joint
Commission according to Assistant Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry Mrs.
Angela Scarborough.
Speaking to the Government Information Service on Monday, Mrs. Scarborough
who headed a delegation to St. Kitts over the weekend, as part of the St.
Kitts and Nevis contingent, noted that several discussions were held and the
area of training was the focal point.
She noted that the commission was set up to assess the needs of each country
and to find a way in which each country could help each other, and added
that the group looked at the area of sports and training.
She said, “Basically, what came out of the meeting was that various
departments needed training in technicians, technical persons. We do need
training in persons for statistics.”
The Assistant Secretary observed that the outcome from the meeting looked
very fruitful saying, “First of all the Cubans would need to go back to Cuba
and meet with their various departments and try to source the needs as
outlined from the meeting. Once that has been done, they would get back to
us as to how they can help us in these various area.”
Mrs. Scarborough explained that many of the programmes available are of
long-term duration for five to six years, with the first year being a
language emersion. She also explained that there were no particular criteria
available, except availability of space in the university and the particular
need. “Wherever they can help us they would try to find a department that
can perhaps send somebody here to train local persons or find schools that
are available and positions available where somebody from Nevis can go over
and follow a programme.”
Following an assessment of the areas in which the Cuban Government would be
able to help, the Nevis Island Administration would be able to take
advantage of possible prospects. The delegation was comprised of persons
from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Culture and the Nevis
Air and Sea Ports Authority.
