BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 15TH 2007 - More homeowners for St. Kitts amd Nevis as final plans for two of the three housing projects were discussed at Monday's meeting of the Cabinet.
Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said the Cabinet during its routine meeting on Monday "engaged in detailed discussions about the remaining arrangements that must be made to finalise the planning phases of two of its three recently announced housing projects."
"These two housing projects will see the expansion of the one, two- and three-bedroom Starter Homes that were constructed a few years ago and the project providing homes for about 200 families of former sugar workers," said Minister Carty.
~~adz:right~~He said the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Cabinet "believes that these two programmes which will be partly financed by the Government of Venezuela must be urgently undertaken and thus the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Social Development have been mandated to conclude the arrangements to have these projects expedited."
Minister Carty said that the relevant ministries will be meeting with representatives of the government of Venezuela during the upcoming week.
The Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas also discussed financing mechanisms for the low income housing programme which will result in the construction of about 1000 homes throughout the country.

"The government reflected on its record in providing housing solutions to low income and middle income people over the past 11 years and hails its achievement in this area as proud and unprecedented," said Minister Carty.
Since taking office in July 1995, over 2000 affordable homes have been built through the National Housing Corporation (NHC). Hundreds of residences have been built or expanded privately through local bank financing and the government-financed Civil Service Home Mortgage Scheme.
