Press & Public Relations, Nevis Island Administration

Charlestown Nevis (June 17, 2004) Management and staff of the Alexandra Hospital have expressed their sincere gratitude to the missionary team from Ohio in the United States of America for work being done at the Pediatric Ward.

We are very glad to have our missionary workers here with us via Mrs. Mary Spooner, who orchestrated this visit,” remarked Acting Matron, Mrs. Aldris Dias.  “We would like to let them know we do appreciate their hard work and all the gestures they have done for us.”  Mrs. Spooner is the Director of Program Evaluation, Holy Cross Children Services, Michigan, U.S.A.

As she expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the administrator, the chief of staff, nurses and patients of the Pediatric Ward, Matron Dias noted that with the enhancement of the ward, it would be a better working environment for the nurses who work there and also for  the children.

The Reverend Mary Wetstone, who has been on the island since June 12, is heading a six-man team comprising of her husband and niece, and another family of three from Granville Ohio.  She told the government information on Tuesday that they have donated several items to the hospital as part of their work.

According to the Reverend, “one of the projects they had to do was to paint the Pediatric Ward, which we painted frost vanilla.  She also noted that some stenciling work has been done on the walls and in the newborn nursery area as well. The bathing rooms for the newborns have received a facelift while the woodwork and cabinets received a varnish job.

Despite the work being done at the Alexandra Hospital, the team is finding time to enjoy the island as the Reverend noted the warm hospitality they have been receiving since their arrival.

They are scheduled to leave the island on June 19, 2004.
