Residents are being encouraged to attend the lecture and other presentations by cardiologist and author Dr. Michael Ozner in order to receive advise on preventing and managing chronic diseases.
Director of Community Health Services Dr. Hazel Williams Roberts said Dr. Ozner "has almost single handedly pioneered the prevention of cardiovascular disease approach through a nutritional lifestyle prescription, based on his wealth of knowledge and experience and we are going to benefit from having him here."
Dr. Roberts mentioned the public lecture and the 'Go Red' Luncheon as well as the fact that he would be meeting with the medical community. She added that his interaction with various sectors of the general public, by way of the different locations/settings would be able to reach different target audiences. During his meeting with the medical professionals, he would be given the opportunity to give details on the principles of his nutritional approach as well as canvass support for promoting this approach in the regular clinical practice.
Dr. Roberts gave some details on the public lecture which is appropriately named "Eat to your

heart's content." She said they wanted it to be known that food is not the enemy once the appropriate nutritional choices are made. Using an analogy she noted that health is basically like a bank " you will get out of it exactly what you put in. She continued by noting that you won't be able to draw extra from this bank account " so if you eat right, reduce stress and exercise you will be able to prevent chronic diseases or you will be able to control them if your have them already.
Dr. Ozner had been practicing for 20 years before he came up with the concept of healthy lifestyles, as explained by Dr. Roberts. She said he noted in his clinical practice that heart patients who had received medical interventions such as angioplasty, to widen their arteries, were still coming back so he figured out that the secret is not just addressing the individual problem but prevention.

In collaborating with other providers and via studies etc, he realized that the nutritional approach is ideal because it helps to control and prevent chronic diseases in persons who already have a risk factor, including a genetic link or obesity.
Dr. Ozner's schedule includes radio and television appearances, meetings with Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Health Honourable Rupert Herbert and the medical community. His public lecture takes place May 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean Terrace Inn and he will give presentations at the 'Go Red' Luncheon on Women and Heart Disease and to the female employees at the CA Paul Southwell Industrial Site.
