New Wing at the Sandy Point High School
Basseterre, St. Kitts (June 18, 2004): Residents, along with the faculty and students of the Sandy Point High School were reminded of government’s continued commitment to education and the development of young people earlier today.

During a handing over ceremony to mark the opening of a new wing of the school, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport Hon. Jacinth Henry-Martin pointed to the fact that education in St. Kitts and Nevis is virtually free. In fact, it is mandatory for ages 5 to 16 years to attend school. The minister explained that this is so because of the immense value of education.

“This government, which has advanced the cause of the poor and promoted equal education opportunities as a means of elevating the working class above and beyond the fields and the factories ... has underscored its commitment ... by being hard-working and proactive in the building of schools,” she said. The refurbishment of learning institutions and the awarding of scholarships to deserving individuals was also cited by the minister.

Minister Henry-Martin noted that education coupled with a respect for God and an individual’s respect for themselves and others are necessary to succeed in life. She added that learning is a life long activity and persons should expect that while some of life’s most important lessons may not be had in school it is still a vital teaching tool.

The minister acknowledged that while the buildings are inanimate they can be brought to life by the staff and the students who must be willing to capitalize on the opportunities offered.

“These buildings can only breathe with life and emotion ... and success ... if you occupy them and utilize them to the fullest. They are for you and as such you must be here for them,” she stressed while encouraging persons to ensure the facility is maintained properly and not vandalized.

Minister Henry-Martin who also serves as the parliamentary representative for constituency #5 gave credit to the hard-working staff of the Sandy Point High School. She explained that the institution has consistently produced outstanding individuals in politics, sport, commerce and other stratas of society who have contributed to the development of the country, the region and the world.

“I am a product of the Sandy Point High School, I am proud to say. I extend my profound thanks to all of the teachers, past, present and future who will continue to walk these halls and who will continue to train our children and to mold citizens who will continue to produce in this country,” Minister Henry-Martin concluded.
