Miss Yamahita told the government information service that basically, the objective of her visit was to help developing countries implement their social development projects or poverty reduction projects. She said, “I came Nevis to introduce this grant assistance for grass roots human security projects, and that it is organised by the government of Japan.”
She added, “It’s a financial assistance scheme for development projects designed to meet the diverse needs of developing countries. It involves refurbishment and supplies of equipment for primary schools, refurbishment and supply of medical equipment for hospitals, and some water projects like excavation of wells, additional training for handicap, for women, and provision of school bus and also we can do environmental projects.”
NGOs, local governments, schools and hospitals in developing countries should implement the projects.
Junior Minister of Agriculture, the Hon Mr. Livingston Herbert welcomed the Japanese representative to the island. He said, “I would like to use this opportunity to welcome the representative from the embassy of Japan, Researcher for Economic Affairs.”
“She is here to discuss with the Nevis Island Administration, grass root projects and to visit some of the sights and eventually, we can identify some projects so that we can get some Japanese assistance,” said Herbert.
I certainly would like to welcome her to Nevis and trust that during the discussion with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Community Affairs, that the discussion would be fruitful and at the end of the discussions, certainly we would have identified and agreed on a number of projects for consideration by the Japanese Government.”
