BRADES Montserrat, June 8th 2011 - Senior managers in the Government of Montserrat, are this week participating in the first segment of a year-long Leadership Development Programme in an effort to advance the island by transforming its civil service.

Human Resource Advisor Jean Blackstock told Wednesday's gathering that it is hoped the programme will help each manager to build an arsenal of tools that will develop better leaders.

His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis reiterated his call for the civil service to effectively communicate its message to all team members and to the general public. Dep. Governor Mrs. Sarita Francis said the entire programme, which includes a mentorship process will be a key component in the process to move the country forward.

Facilitating the programme is Trinidadian consultation Jacqui Wilson and Suriname-based Marjoleine Hulshof, an organisational analyst and executive coach.

Wilson, who is a former public servant, told the group that "as public servants we should enable to create the right environment for economic activity." The goal, she said is to help Montserrat grow sustainably over the next few years by focusing on the essential core task that each person needs to do and "cut out the peripheral stuff."

She shared her concept of appreciative inquiry which involves discovering what we care about, what we are good at and dreaming about where we would like to go. "What we focus on becomes our reality and absorbs our energy."

The sessions spread out over the next year will take a variety of forms, including the Leadership Circle Profile (TCLP) methodology which is a 360 degree assessment instrument to measure a full array of creative leadership competencies, while measuring competing reactive tendencies. Senior managers will also be given one-on-one mentorship sessions as well as online support to work through challenging areas in their individual leadership styles.
